Weekly Assignment

Everyone is in a holiday frenzy about now, and that frenzy can lead to things getting broken, which is why our latest assignment was Breakable. Now, as we all know, breakable can be interpreted in many different ways. You can break a glass or you can break someone’s heart. And it’s these varied interpretations that have won this week’s assignment. In fact, our first two winners have looked at things being broken in a more emotional way. Our winner was Duna’s woman on the floor. Gosh, what a view point. This shot was a very memorable one that really captured human fragility perfectly. The emotion really comes through here. Our first runner up was another interpretation of a feeling of being broken, ktsdz’s woman in the bathroom. This was another one that really set the mood. You couldn’t help but wonder what was broken. Was it a broken heart? A broken spirit? It really makes you think. And last, but not least we had a very literal interpretation of broken with philip_b’s almond. This one really captured the action associated with something breaking well, and the colours and action can’t help but catch your eye. Well done to all our winners this week.

This week we started a very holiday appropriate theme with our Shopping Assignment. Now, we all know that shopping doesn’t just happen during the holidays, but it’s definitely one time of year where it tends to come to the forefront of our minds. So whether you love it or hate it, this week your goal is to photograph something that says shopping. As always, a quick reminder of the rules. First, your photograph needs to have been taken between 1 – 15 December 2010. Second, your post must include the words “Assignment: Shopping” and the date that the photograph was taken. Finally, your EXIF should be intact, and it’s useful if you can include some of the main points such as camera, lens, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Next week’s assignment will be Holiday Decorations. Show us your Christmas trees, your Hanukkah Menorah, your Kwanzaa Kinara, or your Festivus Pole. Regardless of which holiday you celebrate, we want you to show us how you or others decorate. Don’t forget about the rules of composition that we’ve talked about so many times. And why not consider using a technique that might be new to you like zoom blur or long exposures. They can suit this kind of theme well if used appropriately. Best of luck everyone!
